Sweden enjoys a strong relationship with the video game industry with a number of the world’s highly respected gaming companies headquartered across the country. Most notable is perhaps Mojang which was responsible for one of the world’s most popular games, Minecraft; its success culminating in Microsoft buying it in 2014 for US$2.5 billion.

Experiment 101
Thanks to the development of BioMutant, Experiment 101 is recognised as one of the great up-and-comers of Swedish game designers having been established by former employees of another top Swedish firm, Avalanche Studios, best known for Just Cause. Its post-apocalyptic, open-world, all-action RPG for X Box 1, PS4, and PC is expected to be one of 2018’s big new games. Played from a third-person perspective, the game mixes martial arts with magical fantasy to deliver an immersive adventure.

You only need to mention Minecraft to know its creator, Mojang, is one of the major players in video game design. Founded by Markus Persson, and headquartered in Stockholm, Mojang is responsible for one of the world’s biggest selling games and enjoyed the fruits of that success when it sold the rights for Minecraft to Microsoft in 2014 for US$2.5 billion. It’s also responsible for digital card game Scrolls, 2015’s Minecraft Story Mode, action sidescroller Cobalt and, a year later, Cobalt WASD.

Mr Green
Mr Green has gone from strength to strength since being founded in 2007 by Swedish entrepreneurs Fredrik Sidfalk, Henrik Bergquist and Mikael Pawlo. As a platform for gamers to enjoy, there’s always offers for new and established players, with Mr Green co boasting over 350 individual games for all tastes including different slots to play on a desktop, tablet or mobile phone. As well as welcome bonuses for newcomers, Mr Green rewards loyalty through regular contests and competitions with big-money prizes for the online casino’s VIP members.

Stunlock Studios
The Skövde-based Stunlock Studios created the exciting free-to-play multiplayer action game Battlerite in 2017 which put the company amongst Sweden’s most distinctive video game designers. Before officially launching, the game sold 440,000 early access copies within three months of being made available, clearly indicating its potential. Battlerite, which tests players’ skills and speed, has continued to enjoy a growing number of users over the last year with its popularity, prompting Stunlock to launch a professional league.

Avalanche Studios
Best known for action-adventure video game Just Cause, Stockholm-based Avalanche Studios focuses on open-world environments with its tentpole game complemented by the hugely popular Mad Max, the first AAA title developed by the company, and its first dedicated mobile game, Rumble City. It’s currently developing new games which utilise its proprietary Apex – Avalanche Open-World Engine with its latest project making use of the faces of 12 real people who can have their likeness immortalised in the game.
As well as laying claim to one of the world’s most popular games, Sweden has an abundance of talented video game design companies. Many of whom are continuing to develop internationally recognised games while pushing the boundaries of player interaction.
